South Africa
A country of great variety, from cosmopolitan cities and wine regions to world-famous wildlife reserves.
Introduction
South Africa occupies the southern tip of the continent, with coastlines on both the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Its regions differ enormously: the mountains and beaches around Cape Town, the vineyards of the Cape Winelands, the coastal Garden Route, the Drakensberg mountains and the bushveld of Kruger National Park. Good infrastructure makes it a common starting point for southern African journeys.
Highlights
- Cape Town and Table Mountain — A dramatic city setting between mountain and sea.
- Kruger National Park — One of Africa’s largest and best-known wildlife reserves.
- The Garden Route — A scenic coastal route of lagoons, forests and beaches.
- The Cape Winelands — Historic wine estates around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.
- The Drakensberg — High basalt mountains with hiking trails and ancient rock art.
Why travellers visit
Travellers can combine city breaks, food and wine, coastal drives and safaris in a single trip. Wide choice of accommodation and good road networks suit both first-time visitors and independent travellers.
Before you go
Seasons vary by region: the Western Cape has winter rainfall, while much of the north-east, including Kruger, is driest in the winter months. Allow realistic travel time between regions. Entry rules, health advice and safety guidance change over time, so always confirm current requirements with official government sources before you travel.
